Arthroscopic Meniscal Surgery

  • Keyhole surgery to treat meniscal tear by repair or resection
  • Aim is to preserve (repair) as much meniscus as possible utilising latest techniques and technology
  • There are many tear configurations of which only 15-20% are repairable ( where meniscus is sewn back together)
  • If repaired then a removable brace is required preventing flexion beyond 90 degrees is required for 6 weeks
  • If not repairable then careful resection of tear only is required
  • Special training and techniques required
  • Must do a rehabilation program after surgery where one must expect a 3-4 month recovery
  • Purpose of surgery is to return to activity / reduce requirement for knee replacement
