After a lifetime of sport including squash, tennis, rowing and also regular exercise classes I was not surprised when in my fifties my right knee, which had sustained a few injuries, became stiff and aching. I also have a family history of arthritis.
In my mid sixties the knee suddenly became very painful, so I visited my GP. He didn’t look at or examine my knee. He reached for his prescription pad and prescribed me strong painkillers and a referral to a physiotherapist who did examine my knee and sent me off with exercises and an appointment for 6 weeks time. The exercises were very painful.
I saw my osteopath and she told me that she had referred several patients to Mr Jairaj, all of whom had reported excellent outcomes.
I was in so much pain and hardly sleeping and I knew that continuing with the NHS would almost certainly mean a long wait for treatment. So I agreed to be referred to Mr Jairaj. This was a very good decision.
Mr Jairaj examined me throughly and listened to me. I agreed to an X-ray and then scans. The results showed that a knee replacement operation would be an option but I was not pressurised into making a decision. Mr Jairaj explained other, less intrusive, options that could be tried first.
I had no hesitation in deciding on the full replacement and a date was agreed for the surgery. I was well treated throughout the pre-ops and the operation and recovery in hospital.
Just a few weeks after the operation I was in less pain than before, sleeping better and only taking paracetamol occasionally.
The exercises and physiotherapy was painful at first but every week my flexibility and movement improved.
Mr Jairaj had explained that a custom knee replacement would result in a quicker recovery and better outcome long term but I was surprised at just how quickly I was walking without crutches!
Five months after the operation I went on a 7 mile walk in the Cotswolds. I started Line Dancing 9 months after the procedure and now, after 13 months I mostly forget that I have a new knee. When climbing stairs the new knee feels much stronger than the old left knee!!
I am impressed by the professionalism, understanding and empathy of Mr Jairaj and his team and would recommend them wholeheartedly.
